Mark Zuckerberg is taking the world by storm following a creepy announcement that the Facebook will now invest millions into the metaverse. In some ways, Zuckerberg somewhat pretended he’s inventing the metaverse. He’s even changing the Facebook name to meta as his proverbial pee on the Internet’s rose bushes.
But the metaverse has been pushing forward without Zuckerberg’s input, acquisitions, or censorship. That said, billions of dollars will absolutely influence where all of this goes.
And that brings up a great question – where the heck is this metaverse stuff going and will it drastically reshape porn as we know it?
The Metaverse – What’s It About?
The metaverse, in simple terms, will be a 3D rendering of your virtual life. That is, if you choose to accept a virtual life. This is kind of a Matrix red pill or blue pill moment, though. You’ll likely end up having to choose one way or the other.
You’ll be able to shop and attend events on the metaverse via your metaverse avatar. You’ll need devices to help you along, such as VR headsets and a fast running, modern computer. In many ways, your current social media experience likely merges into a metaverse being. You might work in the metaverse. There’s a lot to digest here and not all of it is great news. But it is what it is, for lack of a better phrase.
The metaverse, in simple terms, is virtual teleportation. You’ll be able to teleport your being to new virtual destinations. Some of those destinations will reflect real-life places and adventures while others will be created from scratch. There aren’t likely to be many limits to the metaverse and how we experience, which is why everyone wants in at the top level. By everyone, I mean Mark Zuckerberg, the robotic figurehead of Facebook.
Mark Zuckerberg claims we will “build the metaverse together.” What he really means is, we’ll all help censor content until the metaverse looks and feels as he wants it.
His creepy announcement feels as though Zuck just stepped off an intergalactic flight. The man doesn’t seem to be man at all, more alien.
In fact, Zuckerberg’s metaverse announcement was so creepily uncomfortable, Internet comedians are having a field day.
But what is the reality of the metaverse?
The metaverse already exist. And it’s thriving. The metaverse is a virtual reality world built using 3D blockchain technology. In metaverse, you can purchase property, attend concerts, or visit with your grandma who lives in Hong Kong. The metaverse intends to connect the world like never before via online avatars.
If you are familiar with Fortnite, or Call of Duty, you’re on the right path in understanding what the metaverse is. The music industry is already making bank putting on concerts via major stars (including Justin Bieber). Investors are spending billions buying up metaverse properties.
Even the Manchester City soccer club is building a metaverse stadium. So will we one day watch live sporting events in the metaverse? That seems to be where this is all heading. Again, this is coming, where you like it or not. And there’s a lot to dislike, but more on that later.
Whether we like it or not, the metaverse is arriving. And not in an orderly, polite fashion – but more in a brakeless train speeding into a train station. There’s going to be a super loud and scary crash and then we will see where things pan out.
The metaverse seeks to unite us, but reality may be a colder experience. As mentioned, investors are dumping billions into metaverse properties. That sounds a lot like the world we know. You know, the capitalist world a lot of people aren’t particularly happy with. I’m not making a political statement, capitalism is fine by me, I’m merely bringing up the elephant in the room. For those who think the metaverse offers distinct change, they may be wrong.
One of the major concerns involving an incoming metaverse is privacy and data. If Facebook is involved, let’s be honest, your personal data likely seeps out all over the metaverse for advertisers to leverage. Metaverse privacy issues are likely the biggest issue we face if history is our teacher. The way big tech in general have leveraged and shared our personal data is astounding. I wouldn’t expect much of a deviation with all the opportunities ahead in metaverse.
Decentraland
While Zuck seems to imply he’s leading the metaverse evolution, Decentraland has been up and running for a while now. The blockchain based metaverse allows anyone to sign up and begin experiencing a new kind of virtual reality. Decentraland is where you can currently buy property and attend concerts.
Will Metaverse Porn Become a Thing?
If you don’t think metaverse porn is coming, you’re severely slow on the uptake. Porn not only finds its way into new technology every time, but it often becomes a core installation of it.
The Internet’s entire billing model came about once porn entered the fray. Some might argue that early porn sites inspired today’s subscription models. People were ready and willing to pay for porn in the early 2000s as the Internet came to be and that set the stage for a whole new Internet.
In short, porn is likely to dominate the metaverse. Just look at Holodexxx, a virtual reality porn game that allows you to exist in a world untouchable in your normal life. In some ways, Holodexxx is an entry level metaverse. Clearly, Holodexxx doesn’t allow you to buy property or take your pornstar lover to a Justin Bieber concert; but it’s still an introduction to the idea of metaverse.
Metaverse Pros
You’ll be able to connect with most people around the world in a more intimate setting.
Attend major concerts and sporting events from the comforts of home.
Gain employment (probably).
Reinvent yourself (creepy, but true).
Porn probably becomes an infinitely better experience.
Metaverse Cons
Billionaires are already buying up all the stores and property.
Zuckerberg will try to dominate and censor.
Our technology addictions are already bad, this ramps things up to a whole new spectacle.
The big tech consumer data grab likely accelerates dramatically.
The metaverse isn’t arriving, its arrived. Mark Zuckerberg seems to imply he’s inventing it, but metaverses like Decentraland have been thriving for a while now. The metaverse is sure to house it’s fair share of porn.
The metaverse is in its inception stage. Because it is early in its evolution, it is mesmerizing and almost scary to consider where it may end up. If we compare the Internet just 15 years ago to today, the landscape is strikingly different.
